Alleged Colorado camper-trailer thief arrested after crashing repeatedly during getaway attempt

An alleged thief had the means, but not the skill to pull off a camper trailer theft in Colorado Springs late Thursday night, police records show.

Patrick David Byers, 31, was arrested at 10:04 p.m. after he allegedly ran away from a stolen camper trailer after he crashed it several times including into a car, according to a police report.

Officers chased Byers down and arrested him, according to the report.

An investigation determined that Byers allegedly stole his employer’s pickup truck in order to steal the camper, parked at 6560 Delmonico Dr.

The alleged getaway went awry.

“During the theft of the trailer the suspect struck several (objects) in the parking lot to include a parked car,” the report says.

Officers recovered both the stolen truck and camper trailer, it says. Byers was booked into the El Paso County Jail, according to jail records.

Byers has been arrested numerous times for mostly misdemeanor offenses including domestic violence, public fighting and driving while intoxicated dating back to 2005, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.

He is currently on probation for a drug possession conviction in 2017, CBI records say.
