Woman in custody for stealing a car then leads troopers on chase in stolen state patrol vehicle in western Colorado

A 29-year-old woman was arrested in Mesa County on Friday after authorities say she stole a Colorado State Patrol vehicle while in custody for another car theft.

State patrol initially responded just after 3:40 p.m. to a stolen vehicle crash on Interstate 70, east of the Beaver Tail Tunnel, CSP said in a news release. But as troopers approached, Venessa Jaramillo and Nickolas Mascarenas, 36, fled scene, with Jaramillo crossing the highway and jumping into the Colorado River, state patrol said.

After she was caught and in custody, Jaramillo allegedly stole the state patrol car, CSP said. She then led state troopers on a chase down the highway, eventually crashing the stolen car. She was taken into custody and booked into Mesa County jail.

A trooper responding to the scene was involved in a separate crash with a motorcycle, CSP said. The motorcyclist went to the hospital with minor injuries and the trooper drove to the hospital as a precaution, according to state patrol.

Jaramillo was also wanted on two misdemeanors warrants and one felony warrant out of Lake County, CSP said in the release.
