Man fatally shot in east Denver overnight, police say investigation ongoing

Denver Police are investigating a second fatal shooting in the city in three days, after responding early Sunday morning to the 6600 block of Leetsdale Drive where one man was found dead of apparent gunshot wounds.

Police responded to calls of a shots fired in the area around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. Upon arrival, they found one man dead and two other people suffering from injuries inflicted by gunfire. Those victims were taken to a hospital.

Investigators are on the scene, Jackson said and Leetsdale remains closed between South Monaco Parkway and South Niagara Street.

“There are still officers actively investigating the scene, still collecting evidence,” Jackson said around 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

Suspect information in the case is limited. Jackson said he is awaiting an update on the conditions of the other two people wounded in the shooting. He expects to update the public on the investigation later Sunday.

The strip of Leetsdale is home to a number of businesses, including a King Soopers grocery store, bowling alley, sushi restaurant and bakery. It is a short distance from George Washington High School.

The killing comes two days after a man was shot and killed in the Athmar Park area of Denver. That shooting, reported at 8:16 p.m. Friday, according to Denver 7, occurred near the intersection of West Alameda Avenue and South Federal Boulevard, also a dense commercial part of the city.

Anyone with information about these shootings is urged to call Denver police at 720-913-2000. To provide information anonymously, call Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
