Armed robbery suspect shot and killed by police in Federal Heights after leading officers on car, foot chase

A man suspected of committing several armed robberies in Federal Heights was shot and killed by police Friday night after leading authorities on a chase, Westminster police said in a news release.

Police located the suspect at a 7-Eleven on 92nd Avenue and Pecos Street about 8 p.m. after receiving reports of a man using a knife to rob several auto parts stores in the area. After police attempted to stop the man as he left the convenience store, he fled in his car, crashing into two vehicles, police said.

Two people involved in the crash were transported to a hospital with unknown injuries, police said in the news release.

The man then ran from the crash, leading officers on a chase. He jumped a fence into the back lot of the Los Amigos Tire Shop at the corner of 92nd Avenue and Federal Boulevard, police said.

Officers heard what sounded like gunshots coming from the fenced area, according to police. The suspect was confronted by officers as he tried to climb over a fence into a neighboring condominium complex.

An officer used a Taser on the suspect, before four officers — two from Westminster, one from Thornton and one from Federal Heights — opened fire, killing the man.

Police said the man was armed with a handgun, but authorities did not know if he fired at officers at any point.

The Federal Heights officer was wearing a body camera, police said.

Westminster police Sgt. Trevor Materasso requested that any witnesses — especially those with video of the incident — contact him at 303-658-4288.

The 17th Judicial District is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The incident marks the 65th time this year in Colorado that a member of the public has been wounded or killed by police, the first in Federal Heights.
