A suspicious death investigation is underway in Jefferson County where deputies on Thursday, in heinous heat, found a body in the trunk of a car.
“The smell was enough for us to get a search warrant,” said Mark Techmeyer, a sheriff’s spokesman.
Deputies were called about 2:30 p.m. to 3505 S. Nelson Circle, the Whisper Creek Apartments, by a man who complained of a foul odor coming from the trunk of white Ford Focus parked nearby.
Deputies arrived in 100-plus-degree heat and were alarmed by the stench. Investigators got a search warrant for the vehicle and popped the trunk with the help of West Metro Fire Rescue personnel.
Initially, upon opening the trunk, investigators could not determine the gender of the body inside. The body was left in the trunk and the vehicle was towed to a crime lab for analysis in a controlled setting.
Ownership of the vehicle was being tracked Thursday afternoon, Techmeyer said. Investigators hope to determine the gender and identity of the victim in the ongoing investigation by Friday.
